Adding Additional Name Servers to DNS Records

Name servers store your domain's resource records, containing vital information about email providers and web hosts. While Squarespace automatically creates these when you register a domain, you may need to add custom name servers for specific purposes, like managing subdomains on different servers.

Before Adding Custom Name Servers:

  1. Disable DNSSEC protection to prevent errors
  • Access Domains dashboard
  • Select your domain
  • Navigate to DNS > DNSSEC
  • Disable DNS Security Extensions
  • Confirm the action

Adding Custom Name Servers:

  1. Gather NS records from your provider
  2. Access DNS Settings through your Domains dashboard
  3. Navigate to Custom Records and click "Add Record"
  4. Select NS as the record type
  5. Enter the host value from your provider
  6. Input the provider's NS record in the Data field
  7. Save changes (allow 24-72 hours for updates)

Removing Custom Name Servers:

  1. Disable DNSSEC
  2. Reset to Squarespace name servers:
    • Go to Domain Name Servers
    • Select "Use Squarespace Name Servers"
    • Save changes
  3. Re-enable DNSSEC

Common Troubleshooting:

  • "Unable to add name server" error: Usually appears during domain transfers
  • Missing DNS Security Extensions option: Remove DS records manually from DNSSEC settings
  • Allow up to 72 hours for changes to take effect
